FOCUS: 2021 Property Tax Bills

… from assessment to the bill.

I’m trying to understand my property tax statement and have questions about the ‘rollback’.  My assessed value is the same as it was in 2019, but the TAXABLE amount has gone up.  When I called the assessors office I was told it’s because the rollback was changed by the Iowa State Revenue Department.  Would you please help understand this?  It would seem that I now not only have to worry about the individual taxing authorities, but also another obscure method of increasing revenue and raising my taxes.

Thank you very much for reviewing this question.

Topics discussed:

  • The two-year assessment cycle.
  • The 18-month process from assessment to your bill
  • What is the “rollback” and how is it figured?
  • Looking at 2021 property tax bills.
